1. Can I use the clothes closet in the spare bedroom?

Yes you can, but where do you put your extra clothes then?
I wouldn’t recommend it, there’s no ventilation.

2. If I buy a closet, what should I buy?

Actually it’s not a closet, but a wardrobe cabinet. It is 21 inches deep, 47 inches wide and 71 inches high. This is a perfect size. It takes up as much space as a dresser or chest of drawers.

3. Where can I buy a closet at?

You can buy one at Home Depot or Lowe’s. They run about $120.
The Sauder Company makes one, if you can find a distributor.

4. I don’t have a lot of tools, should I buy a closet?

It would be a lot easier that way. I’m sure you know the saying, a tool for every job. If you buy a closet, you will need only a minimum of tools.

5. If I build my closet, what kind of wood should I use?

You will want to use ¾ inch plywood for the main shell of the closet. You can use ½ inch or 5/8 inch plywood for the doors. I would use ¼ inch plywood for the back. You can also use ¾ inch melamine. That’s particle board with a white plastic cover. That’s what the store bought closet is made of.

6. How big can I build a closet?

You can go as big as you want. Plywood comes in 4 ft x 8 ft dimensions. So plan accordingly. The point of using the closet was so you wouldn’t tie up a whole room with your garden.

7. What kind of light goes inside?

You want a 400 watt HPS or metal halide light, preferably a combo metal halide/HPS light. If you can’t find a combo, just get a HPS light. They are more versatile.

8. What kind of fan is used?

You will use a regular bathroom fan, as long as you stat with the basic size closet I’ve already talked about. The fan moves 50 cubic feet a minute. That’s enough air movement to replace the air in the closet in one minute.

9. Why this particular style of hydroponics?

It works perfect with the shape of the closet. The tubes allow for a clean return of the nutrients, and the roots don’t get in the way. Everything is totally enclosed.

10. Can you change the shape of the hydroponics system?

Yes you can change the shape or size of the system. The main thing is to have the drain tubes going into the reservoir. If you can refigure the measurements you can change it.

11. Why a Drip System?

The drip system gives you continuous delivery of nutrients to the plants. You don’t have to worry about floods as much with a drip system.

12. Do you have to change the emitters?

Yes, they should be changed to a bigger size as the plants get bigger. You should have extra emitters in each size, when you change the nutrients, change the emitters even if you aren’t changing the size. Clean the ones you just took off save them for the next time you change nutrients.

13. What if there are leaks?

I always have a tube of silicone sealer when working with any plumbing materials. Make sure all your connections are pushed in all the way. Check that there is enough glue in all of your joints. If it is the drip system leaking, it probably is the connections are not all the way in.

14. Why isn’t the light very bright at first?

It is a HID light (high intensity discharge), which has to warm up the gases inside the bulb. If you ever lose power to the light, even for a second, turn it off (unplug it) for at least 15 minutes, before you try to restart the light.

15. Where can I buy all this stuff?

You can buy most of this stuff at your local grow store. I would go to eBay for the light. If you don’t have a grow store in your area, you can get all of your grow supplies on eBay, including the submersible pump. The closet and material for the hydroponics system and the drip system can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
